When we first moved into our Georgia home nearly three years ago, we envisioned a few changes right off the bat – painting our entire interior, upgrading our alarm system and replacing some wood pieces on our deck. Our home was built in 1999, so while it’s not old by any means, there were definitely parts that felt outdated. We love the bones of our home, but like any new-to-you home there are always things you’d love to change to make it feel more like your own! But major changes (or minor changes for that matter) can add up fast, so given the fact that we were first time home owners, we wanted to be strategic about each project we did.
I am lucky enough to have my father living close by to guide our renovation projects. He has a decades-long background in tile setting and general contracting. To put it mildly, he is a man who can truly build, fix, and do ANYTHING. We are always thankful when he comes out of retirement to complete our projects. He not only wants to do them, he truly feels a sense of pride in his work and we are lucky recipients of his talents.
How this project came to be:
Truthfully, Benjamin’s bathroom wasn’t really a project that was on our radar. Unfortunately for us, a water leak gave us a nice surprise car wash when Ben’s shower suddenly started leaking into our garage below. Cracks in the grout had allowed water to seep through, so figured it was the perfect time to give Benjamin’s bathroom the upgrade it long deserved!
The bathroom is a jack-and-jill style that connects Benjamin’s room and our playroom. Olivia has her own bathroom in her bedroom, so thankfully the kids do not need to share one. I know this will come in handy as they get older! With that said, Benjamin’s bathroom is the one the kids use most so we wanted to make sure we gave it a proper upgrade! Tackling a DIY project can feel really overwhelming, but thankfully I knew the direction/style I wanted to go in so it was really just a matter of finding what I needed and going from there.
The Before:

The After:

Vanity area:
We did a hexagon floor tile throughout the entire bathroom and I just love how clean it looks! We opted to use a warm gray grout to give the tile more of a pop. The lighter gray grouts tend to look darker when wet, but when it’s dry it doesn’t give a dirty look the way some darker gray grouts can. We chose to keep the existing vanity since it’s high quality, opting to give it a new top and fresh coat of paint. We used the color Krypton by Sherwin Williams. It’s truly the perfect blueish gray. We replaced the vanity top with a white marble top to give it a cleaner look. My dad had the brilliant idea of doing a subway tile accent wall to tie in the shower tile, and I am obsessed with how it turned out! I love that it adds a subtle pop of fun to the bathroom. In order to give the bathroom some character, we opted for touches of black accents throughout the bathroom. We chose simple black mirrors, black vanity hardware and sconces. I absolutely love how the black accents tie everything together!

Shower Area:
For the shower area, we went with a simple, white 3 x 6 subway tile. We also went with the same warm gray grout. My dad was insistent upon adding a niche for shampoo bottles and it was the best decision! I can’t tell you what a pain it is to balance bottles in the corners of the bathtub! We used a marble hexagon tile in the niche to coordinate with bathroom floor tiles, and I just absolutely love it! We decided to go to the ceiling with the shower tile and I think it gives the shower a more expansive look!

We also gave the entire bathroom a fresh coat of paint. I added some new towels that I found at Costco, and it ended up matching the bathroom rug perfectly. We added cute little accents that I know will change over time as Ben gets older! Ben is so thrilled with his new bathroom and that makes me so happy! If you have any questions, let me know! I’m always happy to help in any way I can.
